The Allen-Bradley 1769-ASCII module is a general-purpose channel module. It provides 2 independent channels for ASCII devices and supplies them with a flexible networkinterface. The 1769-ASCII provides communication connections to other ASCII devices which are serially-isolated from the back-plane and from each other. It has 3-different media which can link to the serial devices and be auto selected when connected to the 1769-ASCII's 9-pin D-sub connector. When the desired media is selected, the 1769-ASCII module will project it. It sends data through the serial port when the controller is in Run mode and it delivers data received in the serial port to the controller when not in Run mode.

The Allen-Bradley 1769-ASCII can configure up 31 words. It has inputs composed of 2 full duplexes (RS-232, RS-422) and 2 half duplexes (RS-485). It has two DB-9 male (with pins) serial port connectors. The module's serial input voltage signal is 3-25V DC on signal ground 0 when active and 3-25 V DC on signal ground 1 when inactive. It has a 425 mA bus current at 5V DC and a maximum power dissipation of 2.13 W. The 1769-ASCII module reaches up to 7.3 BTU/hr at its maximum thermal dissipation. The 1769-ASCII's isolation voltage is 30 V and it is tested to withstand 710V DC for 60 s. Its serial port statuses are TX FIFO/RX FIFO overflow, RX parity error, handshake error, and new data flag. The 1769-ASCII has an RTS/CTS hardware handshake enabled.

The 1769-ASCII module's operating temperature is 0-60 °C and has been tested in cold, dryness, heat, and thermal shock. It has a storage temperature of -40-85 °C tested while non-operating. It also comes with a 5-95% relative humidity, its operating vibration is 5g at 10-500 Hz, its operating shock is 30g, and its non-operating shock is 50g. The1769-ASCII has dimensions of 87 x 34 x 118 mm and weighs 0.18 kg.

About the Module The 1769-ASCII module provides a flexible network interface to a wide variety of RS-232, RS-485, and RS-422 ASCII devices. The module provides the communication connections to the ASCII device.

Install the Module Compact I/O is suitable for use in an industrial environment when installed in accordance with these instructions. Specifically, this equipment is intended for use in clean, dry environments (Pollution Degree 2(1)) and to circuits not exceeding Over Voltage Category II(2) (IEC 60664-1).(3)

(1) Pollution Degree 2 is an environment where, normally, only non-conductive pollution occurs except that occasionally a temporary conductivity caused by condensation shall be expected. ATTENTION Preventing Electrostatic Discharge This equipment is sensitive to electrostatic discharge, which can cause internal damage and affect normal operation. Follow these guidelines when you handle this equipment: • Touch a grounded object to discharge potential static. • Wear an approved grounding wriststrap. • Do not touch connectors or pins on component boards. • Do not touch circuit components inside the equipment. • If available, use a static-safe workstation. When not in use, store the equipment in appropriate static-safe packaging. WARNING If you connect or disconnect the serial cable with power applied to this module or the serial device on the other end of the cable, an electrical arc can occur. This can cause an explosion in hazardous locations. Be sure that power is removed or the area is nonhazardous before proceeding. (2) Over Voltage Category II is the load level section of the electrical distribution system. At this level transient voltages are controlled and do not exceed the impulse voltage capability of the product’s insulation. (3) Pollution Degree 2 and Over Voltage Category II are International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) designations.

Minimum Space Maintain spacing from enclosure walls, wireways, adjacent equipment, etc. Allow 50 mm (2 in) of space on all sides for adequate ventilation.
