  • Lam Research Corp. is one of the three largest chip manufacturing equipment suppliers in the United States. On January 26, 2023, Lam was laying off about 7% of its staff to reduce expenses in the event of market downturn.
  • Lam estimates that the costs associated with layoffs and facility reductions will be $150 million to $250 million. He predicted that the overall market of chip equipment would shrink to about $75 billion this year, down about $20 billion from the previous year.
  • Doug Bettinger, chief financial officer, said on a conference call with analysts that layoffs were only one of the costs Lam was cutting. However, one department of Lam will not be cut, that is the research and development department. Bettinger said that the company expects that the percentage of R&D expenses in operating expenses in 2023 will increase compared with that in 2022.
