You can use the serial ports to connect to a device that sends and receives ASCII and other serial communication. With Series A Revision D (1.20) and later of the firmware, the serial port drivers include Data Carrier Detect functions (_ss_dcon and _ss_dcoff) and they also support RS-485 communications. The serial port on the expander module (1771-DXPS) handles reception of 7-bit even-parity communications.
