The 3300 XL 25mm Sensor System consists of an independent 25mm probe, extension cable, and 3300 XL 25mm Proximitor sensor. The system provides a 0.787 V/mm (20 mV/mil) output, giving a linear range of 12.7mm (500 mils). Based on this linear range, the 3300 XL 25mm Sensor System is suitable for measuring the differential expansion (DE) caused by the growth differences between the turbine rotor and the machine stator in medium to large steam turbine generators.
Differential Expansion (DE) Measurement
Differential expansion measurement is performed by two proximity sensors observing a collar or slope at a distance from the thrust bearing. A typical transducer installation arrangement is:
Two sensors observing the collar on the same side.
Two complementary input transducers observing opposite sides of the collar, effectively doubling the measurable DE range.
Two sensors, with at least one observing the slope on one rotor and the second sensor compensating for radial motion by observing a different position on the rotor.
This arrangement increases the measurement error but can measure a larger total DE distance compared to complementary measurements.
The standard for selecting the installation method is based on the available target size, the expected amount of axial rotor movement, and the type of DE target present in the machine (collar vs. slope). If there is enough collar height, the preferred configuration is for the two sensors to observe the collar on the same side. These two sensors provide redundant measurements.
