Chlordiazepoxide, trade name Librium, is a sedative and hypnotic medication of the benzodiazepine class; it is used to treat anxiety, insomnia and withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and/or drug abuse.
Chlordiazepoxide has a medium to long half-life but its active metabolite has a very long half-life. The drug has amnesic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, hypnotic, sedative and skeletal muscle relaxant properties.
Chlordiazepoxide is indicated for the short-term (2–4 weeks) treatment of anxiety that is severe and disabling or subjecting the person to unacceptable distress. It is also indicated as a treatment for the management of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
It can sometimes be prescribed to ease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome combined with clidinium bromide as a fixed dose medication, Librax.
Adults often take oral dosage. Anti-anxiety, 5-25mg once, 3-4 times a day; Elderly or frail patients, 5mg at one time, 2-4 times a day, and the dosage gradually increases to the tolerance as required. Sedation, 5-10mg at a time, 15-40mg a day. Insomnia, 10-20mg at a time, take before bed. Antiepileptic, 10-20mg at a time, 30-60mg a day.
Oral dosage for children. Anti-anxiety, children under 6 years old dosage is not determined. Children over 6 years old start from the minimum amount, usually 5mg once, 2-4 times a day, and increase to 10mg once as required, 2-3 times a day.
