Foley catheters can come in two different configurations: 2-way and 3-way. The main difference between the two lies in their design and functionality.
2-Way Foley Catheter: A 2-way Foley catheter, also known as a standard Foley catheter, consists of two lumens or channels. Here are its components:
a. Drainage Lumen: This lumen is used for urinary drainage. It extends from the tip of the catheter to the drainage port or collection bag, allowing urine to flow out of the bladder.
b. Inflation Lumen: The inflation lumen is used to inflate and deflate the balloon located near the tip of the catheter. The balloon is typically filled with sterile water once the catheter is inserted into the bladder, securing the catheter in place.
3-Way Foley Catheter: A 3-way Foley catheter has an additional lumen, making it different from the 2-way version. It includes the following components:
a. Drainage Lumen: Similar to the 2-way catheter, this lumen is responsible for urine drainage from the bladder to the collection bag.
b. Inflation Lumen: The inflation lumen serves the same purpose as in the 2-way catheter, allowing inflation and deflation of the balloon.
c. Irrigation Lumen: The irrigation lumen is the additional channel in a 3-way Foley catheter. It is used for instilling sterile irrigating fluids into the bladder. This lumen has a separate port or connection for introducing the irrigation solution.
3-way Foley catheters are primarily used in specific medical situations that require bladder irrigation, such as:
Postoperative bladder irrigation to flush out blood clots or debris.
Continuous bladder irrigation to prevent or treat blood clots or promote urinary tract healing after certain surgeries.
Medication instillation, where specific medications or solutions are administered directly into the bladder through the irrigation lumen.
It's important to note that the use of a 2-way or 3-way Foley catheter depends on the patient's specific needs and the medical condition being treated. The selection of the appropriate type of catheter is determined by healthcare professionals based on the patient's clinical requirements.

Features
- The 2 way foley catheter is made up of latex bonded with silicone elastomer which eliminates the risk of encrustation.
- The urinary catheter has a symmetrical large capacity balloon ensuring a straight tip for proper flow and good sphincter action thus preventing bladder leakage.
- These indwelling catheters are provided with a coned distal end with burr free eyes for atraumatic intubation.
- The hard valve of these urethral catheters ensures easy inflation and deflation of the balloon.
- These foley catheters are colour coded for instant size identification.
