Optical segments are point-to-point links, which are connected by repeaters. The maximum signal turn-around time (back- and forth) between two any devices on the AF100 may not exceed 42 µs (regardless of the media in between).
According to the standard, this limits the number of repeaters switched in series to approximately four with a propagation length (total) of 2 km and 3 µs per repeater. The repeater used in the 07KP99 has a propagation time below 1 µs and allows thus more repeaters.

The RS485 medium uses shielded, twisted wire pairs of 120 Ohm with an equipotential line according to RS485, with a biasing according EN50170 (Profibus). Further details can be found in the IEC 61375 standard. By default, each cable carries the two redundant pairs, for a total of 6 wires.
