Diagnostics are used extensively to ensure that covert failures are detected and result in a
fail-safe reaction. For example, a fault within Speed Input Slice A, as shown in Figure 1 is
localised to that input, allowing Processor Slice A and Output Quads 1 to 4 to continue
operation, i.e. the input operates one out of two with diagnostics (1oo2D) whilst the
remainder of the system continues to operate 2oo3.
