In addition to good resistance to temperature and ageing, the material also stands the tests of extreme mechanical requirements. Because of its high level of purity, silicone is best suited for implants and for applications in biotechnology. Due to their good resilience silicone tubes can be highly recommended as pump tubing.
Silicone tubing is used to transfer liquids, air, or solids, and it is characterized by a round, rectangular, or square shape and a hollow center. Silicone tubing is crimp-resistant and varies in bend radius (flexibility), chemical resistance, wall thickness, durometer hardness, and temperature and pressure handling abilities. Unlike thermoplastics such as PVC, which are processed by heating to a melt with subsequent cooling to the final form, silicones are thermoset materials that are chemically crosslinked and therefore tend to be more resistant to deformation.
