Application for safe bioimplant material :
Testing graphene oxide's biocompatibility
Researcher injected graphene oxide under the skin of mice and between peritoneal tissue in the animals. They varied the amount of oxidizing reagents used in the synthesis to produce distinct states of graphene oxide with different carbon to oxygen ratios. For example, graphene oxide produced with the traditional stoichiometry gave a carbon to oxygen ratio of 2.8:1 while using less potassium permanganate resulted in a form with a carbon to oxygen ratio of 3.1:1.
Oxidation degree and biocompatibility
The researchers varied the oxidation levels to see if there was any relationship between the material’s oxidative state and how biocompatible it was. They found that reducing the degree of graphene oxidation resulted in the material infiltrating and clearing cells faster. They also observed that after injection, the graphene oxide particles coalesced to form an implant-like material in the mice. They monitored how cells infiltrated this aggregate over a time period of a month and also studied the cells’ inflammatory response, which is a natural reaction to a foreign body.
Graphene oxide is part of the class of nanocarbon materials,These materials have excellent mechanical and electronic properties that would be supremely useful for biomedical applications.
