The 4351B Communication Module is designed to ensure reliable operation and fault detection in critical control systems. To test for stuck-on inputs, a switch within the input circuitry is activated, allowing a zero input (Off) to be read by the optical isolation circuitry. While the test is running, the last data reading is frozen in the I/O communication processor, and the module's fault indicator will point to a channel fault rather than a module failure.
The 4351B module also supports hot-spare capability and requires a separate external termination panel (ETP) with a cable interface to the Tricon backplane. It is built to operate reliably even in the presence of a single fault and may continue functioning correctly in certain scenarios involving multiple faults.
This module, which supports MODBUS communication with 4 serial ports and 2 fiber optic Ethernet ports (with RJ45), has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Despite being discontinued, it remains a robust option for systems requiring reliable communication and fault tolerance.
